John Marvin Scott is a music and sound scholar, educator, and multi-instrumentalist improvisor from Mihkwâpisimosos (Red Deer) on the traditional territory of the Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy), Tsuut’ina, Stoney Nakoda, Metis Nation, and the peoples of the Treaty 6 and 7 territories. Residing from 2017-2026 on the traditional territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, John has worked alongside musicians across Western Canada, teaching and performing musical styles from around the globe. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology at the University of British Columbia, under the supervision of Dr. Nathan Hesselink and Dr. Michael Tenzer. His academic research currently focuses on the improvised music collective, New Orchestra Workshop, in Vancouver.
